Brazil's president has ordered the armed forces to help fight a record number of forest fires in the Amazon. The announcement comes after intense pressure from European leaders as fires continued to rage in the world’s biggest tropical rainforest and criticism of Jair Bolsonaro’s environmental policies intensified. It came after France and Ireland said they would not ratify a huge trade deal with South American nations unless Brazil does more to tackle blazes in the Amazon. Forest fires are an annual occurrence in the Amazon region – about 60% of which lies in Brazil. But experts and campaigners blame the scale of this year’s blaze on the green light they believe Bolsonaro has given to those who wish to destroy the rainforest.
